Guide to Applying for Student Visa (Vietnam Student Visa) for Foreigners

A student visa, also known as a Vietnam student visa, is a type of document issued by the authorized agencies of Vietnam, allowing foreigners to enter Vietnam for the purpose of studying or interning. The Vietnam student visa is denoted as DH.

What is a Vietnam Student Visa? A Vietnam student visa, denoted as DH, is a type of visa issued by the authorized agencies of Vietnam. The DH visa is granted to foreigners entering Vietnam for the purpose of studying/interning at universities and colleges nationwide.

The regulations regarding the validity period of the Vietnam student visa are as follows:

  • The validity period of the student visa is shorter than the validity period of the passport or international travel documents by at least 30 days.
  • The maximum validity period of the Vietnam student visa (denoted as DH) is 12 months.

Foreigners entering Vietnam with a student visa denoted as DH may be granted a temporary residence card denoted as DH. The validity period of the DH temporary residence card is not more than 5 years.

Requirements for Obtaining Vietnam Student Visa for Foreigners To apply for a Vietnam student visa, international students need to meet the following conditions (according to Article 10, Law No. 51/2019/QH14):

  1. Possess a passport or international travel document with a validity period.
  2. Have an invitation and sponsorship from an organization, institution, or individual in Vietnam.
  3. Not fall into the category of inadmissible persons.
  4. Foreign students must have an acceptance letter from the Vietnamese educational institution or school.

Immigration Procedure for Foreigners Using Vietnam Student Visa Upon meeting the required conditions and being eligible for a Vietnam student visa, foreigners need to complete the following two steps:

Step 1: Apply for the Vietnam Entry Approval Letter – Purpose of Student Entry This step is crucial for obtaining a student visa. To obtain the entry approval letter, the individual or the sponsoring entity in Vietnam needs to prepare the documentation at the Vietnamese Immigration Department to allow the foreigner to enter Vietnam. The processing time for the Entry Approval Letter is approximately 5-7 working days.

Step 2: Complete the Student Visa Procedures for Foreigners Foreigners can obtain their Vietnam student visa at Vietnamese Embassies/Consulates abroad, international border gates, or international airports in Vietnam. The locations allowed for visa issuance in Vietnam are based on the entry approval letter approved by the Vietnamese Immigration Department.

Documents Required for Applying for Vietnam Student Visa To obtain a Vietnam student visa, international students need to prepare the following documents:

  1. Passport with a validity period of more than 1 year for foreigners.
  2. Visa application form as required by the Immigration Department.
  3. Acceptance letter from the Vietnamese educational institution or school.
  4. Copy of the Vietnam Entry Approval Letter (all pages).
  5. Additional documents and papers required for different nationalities.

The processing time for the Vietnam student visa is 5 working days, starting from the date of receiving the visa request. The processing time may be extended beyond the expected duration in special cases (for information verification, additional document requirements, large volume of applications, etc.).

Vietnam Student Visa Fees For a 12-month validity period, the Vietnam student visa can be issued for either single or multiple entries, depending on the applicant’s case. The visa fees for the Vietnam student visa vary as follows:

  • Single-entry visas (1 month, 3 months): $25
  • Multiple-entry visas (1 month, 3 months): $50
  • Multiple-entry visas (over 3 months up to 6 months): $95
  • Multiple-entry visas (over 6 months up to 12 months): $135

Please note that these fees are for the visa stamping and do not include other processing fees incurred during the application process.
