The news of Vietnam’s expanded 45-day visa exemption for 12 new countries has generated a lot of excitement—and questions! How does it work? What are the rules? Is it right for my trip?
We’ve compiled the most frequently asked questions to help you understand the new policy and travel with confidence.
1. Who exactly is eligible for this new policy?
Citizens holding a valid passport from one of these 12 countries: Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Switzerland.
2. How is the 45-day period calculated?
The 45-day count starts from your day of entry. It is a consecutive period, including weekends and holidays. For example, if you enter on September 1st, you must exit on or before October 15th.
3. Do I need to show any specific documents at the airport?
Yes. While you don’t need a visa, you must present:
-
A passport valid for at least 6 months from your entry date.
-
Proof of an onward or return ticket out of Vietnam within 45 days (airlines may require this at check-in).
4. Can I exit Vietnam and re-enter immediately to get another 45 days?
This is a common question. Vietnam’s immigration law typically requires a “cool-down” period between visa-exempt entries. While rules can be updated, the safest and most flexible way to re-enter is by using a multiple-entry e-Visa, which allows you to come and go as you please within its validity.
5. What if I want to stay for 60 days?
The 45-day visa exemption will not cover your trip. You cannot “extend” a visa exemption from within Vietnam.
Solution: You must apply for a 90-day single-entry e-Visa before you travel. This is the correct and legal way to ensure your entire stay is covered.
6. I am a Belgian citizen. Does this new policy replace the e-Visa system for me?
No, it does not. The visa exemption and the e-Visa system operate in parallel. You have two choices:
-
For trips up to 45 days: Use the visa exemption (no application needed).
-
For trips longer than 45 days or for multiple entries: Apply for a 90-day e-Visa.
⭐ Need a visa for a longer stay or multiple entries?
The 90-day e-Visa offers the ultimate flexibility for your Vietnam adventure.
